A special session. Presiding: Stephanie LeMenager, Univ. of Oregon
Speakers: Stacy Alaimo, Univ. of Texas, Arlington; Jeffrey Jerome Cohen, George Washington Univ.; Lowell Duckert, West Virginia Univ., Morgantown; Steven Roger Mentz, Saint John’s Univ., NY; Serpil Oppermann, Hacettepe Univ.
For centuries the world was held to be composed of four elements bound by love and pulled apart by strife. Elemental theory offered a mode of apprehending ecological materiality not centering the cosmos on the human. This conversation about literature and theory, contemporary and historical, explores how a renewed intimacy with the elemental promises a more dynamic environmental humanities.
